The Little Writers in the Big World

Generally, there are many paths in life.

For example, some people – or most people – take this path in life:

Go to college, get a job, get married, buy a house and have kids

Or they do:

Have kids, go to college, get a job, get married, buy house and have more kids

Or some do:

None of that, they just work, and maybe later get married and have kids

And lastly, I’ve noticed some people do this:

Go to college, travel, get a job, travel, get a job, and then travel again.

And I’m sure many of you are thinking, yes, we know this already aka, where are you getting at?

Well, my point is, there are many paths in life, and that translates to publishing and trying to get our stories out to the world. The closer I get to publishing and the more I learn about it, I wonder what the best option is.

Honestly, it’s a little overwhelming all the options offered to writers today. You can either traditionally publish, letting the publisher do the work, or you can self-publish and do the work yourself (editing, promoting, and getting a cover designer).

I’ve thought about self-publishing Clash of Tides when I finish the book, but then that will introduce new problems. Such as, what social media sites should I use to promote the book? Tumblr, WordPress, Twitter, or Instagram? Then the next question is, should I upload the book for free on platforms like Wattpad, or should I only post a sample? Then, aside from the internet, I have to decide the following:

How many bookstores should I ask to stock my book?

How do I get my name out there in my local community?

How can I arrange book readings for those interested in my story?

As you can see, it’s a lot to think about. Now, I know I’m not the first writer to go through this, and I won’t be the last, but still, all of its overwhelming. In the past, all writers needed to do were submit their manuscripts to agents and publishers, hoping for the best.

Today, with the age of information, various paths are now open to us. I guess I need to decide what road I want to walk down. Even in life, I’ve never chosen the easy path. I usually don’t reveal personal information about myself, but I’m the:

Go to college, travel, get a job, travel, get a job, and then travel again.

I always wanted life to be an adventure, so that is the path I’ve decided for myself. However, I’m unsure of what path is best for my stories. I am a little writer in a big world, and all I want to do is get my stories known. Sadly, it’s a tough decision to make, and I don’t know what road to walk down.
