Blog Tip Series: More than One Account

blog-tips2

Hi! How are you doing today?

Welcome

As I mentioned in my other post, I’ve been MIA because I was working on contest entries and submissions for Writing.com. Also, last week was insanely busy! Needless to say, I’m glad it’s over.

And, I just realized this blog is going to be a year old next month. Honestly, I can’t believe so much has changed in a year. It was around this time last year that I wanted to leave Wattpad behind for good, but I didn’t know what to do. Luckily, someone told me about WordPress and advised I create a website here. Ya know, sometimes I do miss the old writing site I was on because it was easier to meet other writers (sad, I know), but overall, I still prefer WordPress. It’s nice to write the stories I want without dealing with annoying rules and popularity contests.

Anyway, today’s post isn’t about my blog anniversary, it’s about more blogging tips!

Today’s blogging tip may be a strange one, but it’s something I feel is important. To summarize the tip, it’s “Have more than one Account.” To explain further, I feel many writers have their main base for all their work. Now, that may work for some writers, but I feel it’s important to expand your platform online. For example, if you stick to one website, then you are missing out on other followers and readers.

Let’s say you only have your WordPress blog – that’s all you use. You get a few followers and some readers, but it’s only other users on WordPress, which limits you. If you want to capture potential readers outside of WordPress, then YOU, as the writer or blogger, need to do the work. Remember, we want people to read our content, so we have to search for them. Yes, I know it sucks, and it adds more work, but that’s part of an Author Platform.

We can’t stay in one place and think people will come to us because it doesn’t work like that. If you compare “real life” to the “online world,” then writers in real life essentially do the same thing. They go to writer’s conferences, library events and even ask local bookstores to stock their stories. Hell, I know one writer got popular on Wattpad because they were PMing other users (just readers), to check out their stories.

So, throughout those different avenues, they are finding readers for their work. And when they do that, best believe they are mentioning their website and any blogs they have. So if you do decide to expand outside of WordPress, mention your blog. That way, you’ll bring more readers to you. On my many different websites, I will tell readers about my blog. In the future, I plan to use Instagram to expand myself, and hopefully, grow my blog. Personally, I’ve tried to use Twitter, but I don’t like Twitting every day. Also, I’ve noticed some writers on Twitter are so desperate for readers, they’ll follow a bunch of people and then unfollow them. That’s actually a pet peeve of mine.

However, don’t let my experiences discourage you. If you want to find more readers for your blog, then step outside, and find new places to expand your content. ^__^ After all, finding more readers is like this:

Adventure

What websites do you use to find readers, and have you enjoyed the experiences there?

Artist

I wrote this while listening to this:

The pain I feel,
is passed on to my characters

The joy I feel
is showed through my creations

My anger,
dwells within my protagonist

My emotions flow through words,
for I am a writer, an artist

I hope you liked it.

Types of Antagonist in Fiction

Before, I wrote a post on villains, but I would like to expand that topic in today’s blog post. First, sorry I’ve been MIA for a few days. Like with all social media, WordPress was keeping me distracted from something more important in life.

You may ask, “Aka, what’s more important than blogging and sulfuring the internet?”

I respond, “Writing my story, of course!”

Well, that’s what I’ve been doing the past few days. I’ve been working on Love for an Angel chapter 15, so I can post it next week. And alas, I also start a new job tomorrow. While I am thrilled to have a new opportunity, I am also saddened to be leaving a full 12 hour day of writing behind. However, enough of my ramblings, on to antagonist!

moriarty.gif

Just like the gif said, every story needs a good villain. In this post, we’re going to explore the different types of antagonist in fiction.

So, depending on the genre you write, can depend on what type of antagonist you have. For example, I’ve noticed young adult fiction always has the dun…dun…dun…EVIL ADULTS!

Yes, the classic evil adults. Evil adults usually consist of power craving, old ideas that teens don’t agree with, or just plain evil to be evil. O_o Personally, I don’t like the plain evil to be evil bit, but if you are going to go this route, try to write it well.

Stories – bestsellers, mind you – that have the classic evil adults are:

The Selection by Kiera Cass

That evil King who is stuck in his ways is against American Singer (yes, you’ve read that right, the mc’s name is American Singer. >.>)

Cress by Marissa Meyer

This time, it’s a power angry Queen. For shame on her going against a group of teens because she wants to stay on the throne! She is older, wiser, and has been a queen for years. However, those teenagers outsmarted her and all her soldiers. Hmm…

Last, but not least:

Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

What?! You are telling me the Queen and King want to keep us slaves to them so their power will stay intact? Well, us teens will take down a whole kingdom. Why? Because we can!

Ok, all joking aside, you do see the pattern here. I won’t analyze the evil adult because that should be understood, their evil because they desire their powers – simple.

Frankly, I find this to be the easiest antagonist to write. In Clash of Tides, I do have an evil adult, well, I have a few. Elena’s mother is evil because she wants money and power (see what I did there^^). And Assan’s mother, the mermaid queen, well, she is evil for other reasons I won’t say yet. *cough* revenge *cough*

Of course, not all young adult books have the same type of antagonist, but the majority is the same. The series A Shade of a Vampire by Bella Forrest actually had the main male character’s brother has the antagonist in the first book. The brother wanted the main female character for himself, but you get the point. However, the overall enemy was human vampire hunters, and they were not evil. They just didn’t like vampires.

Yep, evil adults:

tumblr_nwfkszsLd51sbqrlmo2_500.gif

Ok, next! For adult fiction, I’ve noticed most antagonists are…other adults (yeah, that was easy) and a magical force (I’m looking at you Game of Thrones and the others). Now, unlike young adult fiction, adult fiction has more than one antagonist at a time.

Examples, and like before, I will be doing bestsellers:

The Shining by Stephen King

Darn those ghost egging on to murder

Outlander by Diana Gabaldon

That Captain Randall…he is really a twisted f*&^

Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin

This is by far one of the best books about multiple antagonists. Not only is it adults vs. adults, adults vs. magical force; it’s also adults vs. insane teenagers. Yes, I’m referring to Ned vs. Joffrey. Sadly, if you read the book, you know what happens. In a way, it also features teens vs. teens. Finally, right? Sansa vs. Joffrey; it was scary to watch.

Now since we pointed out examples of adult fiction, let’s look at the villains. Antagonists in adult fiction need more substance to why they act a certain way.

When crafting your antagonist, ask yourself the following questions:

“What made them this way?”

“What are their motivations?”

“Do they have any mannerism or things that set them off?”

If you are crafting the “magically force” (yes, I am thinking Lord of the Rings)?

“What makes it powerful?”

“What’s the overall goal?”

“Are there any weakness?”

“What or who sealed it up in the first place?”

“How does it power react to the world?”

Whew, well, that was longer than normal, but I hope you found this post helpful!

Oh, and I reached 300 followers!! Love for an Angel will be updated next week!

My Stories

Shameless promotion post, again 😦

Below is the stories I’m working on, please check them out!

Clash of Tides

Clash of Tides cover 2

Ever since my father left I was taught to follow in the footsteps of my mother. Maybe life is just following in the path of another, that we don’t really have a choice in the way we end up. There is no fate, there is no destiny, just the flow of life that we are given. It’s easier to follow the current than fight against it.

– Elena

In a mystical world, where undersea creatures roam, a young woman, Elena, quickly finds herself a part of their world. She was taught to accept her fate; to not fight against the cards she had been dealt. After being taken by a merman, she thought maybe accepting fate is easier than fighting it, especially when a certain merman has specific plans for her. However, just maybe, accepting fate is not always the answer. Will Elena be able to fight the fate that has been flowed to her, or will she be able to fight against the current, and forge her own path in life?

9/Nine Realms

I don’t have a cover yet, but I plan to make one soon 🙂

The world is divided into nine realms – nine provinces of powers that each contains a different element. The strongest elements rule the realm, but for some, that still isn’t enough. Where there is peace, a queen longs to rule it all, and will make sure anyone who opposes her fails.

A young female summoner in training is ready to forge her own path in life, but coming into adulthood is no easy task, especially for a summoner. You either succeed as a summoner or you fail, everyone knows that.

And for the young prince of flames, being a leader is not what he imagined. When the Queen of Death appears, no one is safe, not even an entire world. Will the realms survive the ever growing cloud of purple death, and can one summoner and one prince make a difference? Only time will tell.

The 9/Nine Realms of Power

1. Summoners – Those who can call upon the creatures of Gehenna, using their power as their own. The summon creatures form a pact with their summoner and stay with that summoner until he or she dies. Though a summoned creature can share their life with a human, thus the human lives forever.

2. Death – Those who call upon the power of death, and never die themselves.

3. Air – Those that live in the skies and control the power of wind.

4. Fire – Those that control blazing fires, and live in a giant volcano.

5. Weapons – Those that control metal, creating weapons made of steel.

6. Water – Those that control water and live within its depths

7. Earth – Those that control the ground for which humans walk, living in its dust.

8. Non-magic users – Those that have no power, and can never learn to wield the elements.

One of these realms was destroyed in a war long ago. While nine realms are known, only eight have survived.

9/Nine Realms will be uploaded to my blog soon! I hope you enjoy the stories.
